The quartet who came to form Dim Gray came from different places, both musically and geographically. All four – Håkon Høiberg, Oskar Holldorff, Tom Ian Klungland and former bassist Robin Kirknes Andreassen – moved from different parts of Norway to its capital city in 2012 to start their bachelors degree in music. Having found each other, they soon began playing together. The members have contrasting musical backgrounds in genres as diverse as black metal, progressive rock, blues, folk and film music, but in fusing these together they began to develop their own distinctive and unique sound.

Dim Gray spent several years searching for, and perfecting, their sound. Around 2019 bassist Robin left the band, but not before recording bass for the coming album. 2020 saw the band issue the songs ‘Ráth’, ‘Again’, ‘Light Anew’ and ‘Ouroboros’ prior to a digital only debut album entitled Flown in the summer. A concept record with intertwining songs structured like one continuous story, the album relates a vivid tale of loss and loneliness that constantly twists and turns, with intimate and spatial moments offset with massive and colourful soundscapes. Flown was released on double vinyl and CD in 2021.

Following their critically acclaimed debut album Flown (2020), Oslo-based art rockers Dim Gray return with their sophomore album Firmament on 2nd September 2022 . With twelve direct, vivid and melody-driven songs, the album is bursting with life and colour, making for an engaging and constantly surprising journey as it weaves a route from strings-infused chamber pop, through evocative indie folk and lush electronics and into grandiose art rock.

Firmament is an ambitious musical statement that will appeal to fans of artists such as Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Steven Wilson, Sigur Rós and Susanne Sundfør. Thematically, Dim Gray further explore the landscape of loneliness and melancholy that was introduced on Flown, but this time those sensations are contextualised in the depressions of the modern world and juxtaposed against romanticised ideas of “simpler times” through childhood memories interspersed with myths and superstition.

During may 2022, Dim Gray supported Marillion on their weekend in Stockholm. The show was a roaring success and pushed the band further forward. Following the release of Firmament later that year, Dim Gray supported Big Big Train on three shows in the UK and The Netherlands, as Oskar also joined Big Big Train on keyboards. In May the following year, the band was again asked to support Marillion, this time at their weekend in Leicester. Milad and Kristian was asked to join the band on a permanent basis and in the autumn of 2023, Dim Gray joined Big Big Train on their European tour, playing 15 shows across Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and UK. After returning from tour, they swiftly started working on their third album.
